The Food as Medicine Policy & Research Summit (October 27–28, 2025) brought together leaders across government, healthcare, academia, and the private sector to explore one of the most pressing challenges of our time: how to integrate nutrition, health, and policy to create healthier, more equitable food systems.
Hosted in Arlington, Virginia, this year’s summit featured speakers such as Congressman Earl “Buddy” Carter, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, and experts from organizations including NIH, USDA, Mom’s Meals, Danone, Instacart, and the Food is Medicine Coalition. Their collective work underscores a shared vision of transforming food systems to prevent disease, reduce hunger, and improve health outcomes for all communities.
At Food Enterprise Solutions (FES), we share that vision. Our experts, both local and international, have strengthened the capacity of food enterprises and entrepreneurs to provide safe, nutritious, and affordable foods, particularly in regions where access remains limited. While the Summit emphasizes policy and research at the national level, FES focuses on implementing those principles in practice, in concert with the private sector to build resilient supply chains and sustainable food systems that directly impact health and livelihoods.
The “Food as Medicine” movement aligns closely with FES’s mission. By advancing food safety, improving enterprise performance, and empowering local markets, FES supports the same goals this summit promotes: improving nutrition through systems that work for both people and the planet. An FES project in Senegal helped a baby food company supply nutritious/safe food to underserved populations. In Guatemala, we worked with women coffee entrepreneurs with secondary food businesses, like poultry and pig production, to raise healthier and safer animal products for the families and to create more market opportunities.
As global conversations continue to center on how food can be used as a tool for health, collaboration between policy leaders, researchers, and implementing organizations like FES becomes increasingly vital. Together, we can bridge the gap between policy and practice to ensure that nutritious, safe food is accessible to all.
