Food safety has always been essential. Today, it is also a core driver of market access, buyer trust, and business growth. As we discussed in our recent article on the evolving rules of food safety in global markets, expectations are shifting beyond basic compliance toward systems that demonstrate transparency, traceability, and continuous control across supply chains. As markets grow more complex and standards continue to rise, food enterprises need food safety systems that are practical, scalable, and aligned with how their businesses operate.
This growing gap between regulatory expectations and real-world implementation is what Food Enterprise Solutions’ Business Drivers for Food Safety approach was designed to address.
Over five years of implementation, FES engaged more than 6,000 food businesses across multiple markets, helping enterprises move from reactive compliance toward operational food safety systems that support long-term business performance. Participating businesses collectively represented $37 million in annual sales, demonstrating that food safety investments are directly linked to commercial viability and growth.
What Is BD4FS?
Business Drivers for Food Safety, or BD4FS, is FES’s integrated approach to aligning food safety systems with business strategy. Rather than treating food safety as a standalone technical requirement, the BD4FS approach positions it as a core business function that supports operational performance, risk management, and long-term growth.
Through the BD4FS approach, FES focuses on building food safety systems that enterprises can maintain and scale over time. The goal is not just to meet requirements, but to strengthen internal capability and resilience.
Program results show that businesses receiving BD4FS training and technical support achieved measurable operational improvements. Ninety-nine percent of participating enterprises reported adopting at least one improved food safety management practice, reinforcing that when systems are practical and business-driven, adoption follows.
Moving Beyond Reactive Compliance
Many food businesses address food safety only when prompted by audits, certifications, or buyer requests. This often results in systems that exist on paper but are not fully embedded into daily operations.
Through BD4FS, FES helps enterprises shift this approach by integrating food safety into business planning and decision-making from the start. When food safety is part of how a business operates, teams understand both what is required and why it matters, leading to stronger ownership and more consistent implementation.
Evidence from BD4FS assessments shows that 81 to 92 percent of enterprises incorporated new food safety practices into their operations over a three-year period. Notably, 61 percent of participating businesses identified BD4FS as their primary source of food safety knowledge, demonstrating how structured, business-aligned support drives lasting operational change.
A Market-Informed Approach to Food Safety
Food safety expectations are shaped by markets as much as by regulations. Buyers, retailers, and international partners often require food safety systems that go beyond minimum compliance.
Through BD4FS, Food Enterprise Solutions helps enterprises understand and respond to these market expectations. By aligning food safety systems with real buyer requirements, businesses can build trust, reduce risk, and expand market opportunities.
Market feedback collected during BD4FS evaluations revealed that 62 percent of businesses observed increased consumer concern about food safety and quality, while 76 percent identified formal food safety monitoring as critical to improving customer trust and market access. These findings highlight how food safety is increasingly tied to competitiveness.

Why BD4FS Matters Today
The food system is facing increased scrutiny, greater transparency demands, and higher risk across global supply chains. In this environment, food safety can no longer be treated as a box to check.
FES helps food enterprises move from reactive compliance to proactive, business-driven food safety systems that support sustainable growth. Program findings also show spillover effects, where enterprises outside the program adopted BD4FS-aligned practices, suggesting that business-led food safety improvements can influence entire market ecosystems.
