As the Africa's Business Heroes Summit prepares for its seventh annual gathering in Kigali, the spotlight is turning toward entrepreneurs who are reshaping Africa’s future through innovation, determination, and community-focused leadership. Among this year’s top finalists is Le Lionceau, a Senegalese nutrition enterprise founded by Siny Samba, whose work is creating meaningful change for families, farmers, and food systems across West Africa.
For FES, stories like hers reflect the very spirit of the food system transformation we champion. When local entrepreneurs are equipped to lead, communities thrive, and entire value chains become stronger and more resilient.
Le Lionceau: A Local Solution to a Critical Nutrition Challenge
Founded in 2019, Le Lionceau produces high-quality baby food made from nutritious, locally sourced African ingredients. The company was created to address two long-standing challenges in West Africa: limited access to culturally appropriate baby foods and high rates of childhood malnutrition.
Le Lionceau’s products include purees, cereals, and biscuits that use indigenous crops and traditional flavors familiar to local households. This creates healthier options for parents while reducing dependency on foreign imports.
Through this model, Le Lionceau has already reached more than 150,000 babies and partners with thousands of smallholder farmers who supply fresh, local ingredients that keep the value chain rooted in the community.
Siny Samba: An Engineer Turned Social Innovator
Behind Le Lionceau’s success is the determination of Siny Samba, a Senegalese food processing engineer with a passion for improving childhood nutrition. After studying abroad, Sinny returned home with a clear mission. She wanted to build a food enterprise that honored local culture, strengthened local economies, and delivered nutrition that families could trust.
Her commitment extends beyond product development. Siny and her team host workshops and community training to raise awareness about infant nutrition and the importance of the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. Her approach combines science, culture, and compassion in a way that aligns closely with the values we hold at FES.
To accelerate Le Lionceau’s growth, Siny turned to FES for technical support in food safety and advice in attracting investment. In 2023, Le Lionceau qualified for FES’s Pre-HACCP Validation Badge after successfully adopting and passing an audit of food safety practices. Through FES’s investment-readiness services, Siny also accessed capital investment and financing that helped her scale the business and expand its reach.
Why Le Lionceau’s Recognition Matters
Being named a top finalist at the Africa's Business Heroes Summit highlights the power of locally led solutions that address real needs. It also reflects the growing recognition of businesses that prioritize sustainable sourcing, community empowerment, and long-term health.
This type of enterprise proves that when African entrepreneurs have the right support systems, they can build scalable, high-impact solutions that transform their communities.
For FES, this aligns with our commitment to strengthening food systems through:
Local capacity building
Women-led entrepreneurship
Value chain development
Community-centered innovation
Le Lionceau shows how food businesses can generate profit while creating significant social change. It is an example of what happens when dedicated leaders invest in homegrown solutions that uplift families and farmers at the same time.
Shared Purpose With FES
